Mini pill

The big difference between the mini pill and the combined pill, is that the mini pill contains only one hormone instead of two. This makes the mini pill milder than the combined pill.

What is it?

The mini pill is also known as the Progestogen only pill or POP. It thickens the mucus at the entrance to the vagina so that the sperm can’t reach the egg. It can also stop an egg being released, depending on the type of mini pill you take.

What are the advantages?

It has fewer side effects than the combined pill, doesn’t raise your blood pressure and it can be taken by smokers.

What are the disadvantages

  • Unlike the combined pill, it doesn’t control your periods.
  • It’s slightly less effective than the combined pill and it’s even less effective if you weigh over 70 kg (11 stone).
